they do things bigger in texas.
we went to a birthday party for a 6-year-old girl yesterday (Sunday). this was not your average 6-year-old's birthday party. at least not that i've ever seen. this western-themed party took place on the little girl's ranch...or grandma's ranch, i think...and there were pony rides, a petting zoo, hay ride (and no, annie didn't make it), giant pink cakes, a caricature artist (even addison said annie's caricature looks a little botoxed for a 2-year old). there had to be 30 kids there. this is annie's second time at one of these parties...she got to go to little-sister's party a few months ago. i didn't go, but after hearing about kangaroos and live music, i thought i better go to this one just to satisfy my curiosity. you would, too, wouldn't you?
i am just amazed by the scale of this party. i mean, this is for a 6 year old. it's likely she won't even remember much of this day when she's older. let me just say that it was very fun, they had some killer bbq there, and i appreciate these people opening their house to curious people like me who are only there by default anyway...i really have no place to comment on any of it. but i'm going to.i bet you're wondering what a 6 year old - who gets a huge party like this - gets for a present? in case you're curious you can see here. and here you can see annie trying to get a piece of that action. papa? you ready to get some horseys yet??? so yeah, not one but TWO horses for her 6th birthday. is it me, or are kids just generally more over-indulged today than they used to be? i'm just wondering where you go from there? you get horses - plural - when your 6...what does that leave for the rest of your birthdays? will they all be a giant disappointment? do you get a car when you're 7? do you get your own town when you're 10? whatever happened to bicyles and hula hoops and board games? not that every girl doesn't want a pony when she's little, but i can't say i actually met someone who actually GOT the pony. then again, it is texas, and grandma does own a ranch that already has horses, so it's not really that bizarre. maybe i'm the bizarre one. i'm sure there are lots of you readers out there who would agree with THAT.
it was fun to watch the kids though. i think if given the option, annie would have gone home with the petting zoo animals. she LOVED them all, which is quite the change from the little girl who nearly lost her marbles when we took her to the zoo in sioux falls and asked her to feed a goat. apparently she's over that fear now. here, here, here, here and here are a few more pictures of annie feeding every animal there. those animals ate so much feed in 2 hours, that they were all laying down and turning away from the food after a while.
jasper just hung out and was hot. i did discover how to get your stubborn baby to drink from a sippy cup, though. dehydration. it's the key. i don't know why it took me so long! jasper's face was all red and he was all sweaty and squirmy and i brought out the sippy cup of juice thinking "maybe he's thirsty". boy was that an understatement. the poor thing was gulping that juice down like he'd just stumbled across an oasis in the middle of the sahara.
anyway, we had a good time. after 2 hours the kids all started melting down a bit, so it got a little hectic toward the end there, but we made it out unscathed...sort of. annie was crying that she didn't want to go home, she wanted to hit the pinata, etc. but once we got in the car she was good. speaking of the car, i forgot to include the prelude to this whole story! i called 911 for the first time ever on our way to the party. i was so nervous. so we're driving down this 2-lane highway that's all hilly and winds around every which way. we come up on this truck that is driving rather recklessly - they would speed way up and then brake to a near-stop, they would drive off the road onto the right shoulder and then a little ways down the road do it again. we backed off a bit because we were having visions of the head-on collision they were going to be in and we - with 4 of the little things we love the most in the car with us - were going to be in on it, too. so, we kept driving but kept watching this truck and then all of the sudden we come up over a hill and see this dust in the road and the truck has just done a 180 in the middle of the highway and is blocking both lanes trying to reverse and straighten him/herself out again. it was so scary to watch. that's the point at which niki suggested we call 911.
ever-so-carefully i dialed: 9 - 1...breathe - 1.
have you ever dialed 911 before? i totally felt like i was breaking the rules. like i'd be arrested for prank-calling or something. it was hysterical. i turned into a 9 year old for just a minute there...
"...county 911, what is the state of your emergency?"
"um, we're driving behind a car that is driving very recklessly and..."
(niki: "they just did a 180")
"...yeah, they just did a 180 in the middle of the highway and they're driving off the shoulder and we're concerned they're going to cause an accident"
"what is your location, ma'am?"
"um, we're on 1751 west near I45"
"what's a major cross-street?"
Ok, see, i have no idea where we are because we're like 30 miles north of conroe, so i have no idea. luckily we were still near the interstate, so i just used that.
"we're about 4-5 miles west of I-45 on 1751. it's a red truck, license plate #######..."
" ok thank you ma'am, we've had other calls about that vehicle, someone is on the way."
crazy, right? it was very tense for me. my heart was racing the whole time. i just hope they caught up to that person before they did cause an accident. i don't know what was going on, but it was a little early in the day - on a sunday no less - to be hammered. scary stuff.
